Meet Our Team
Larry
Gwaltney:
The Owner/Broker of CENTURY 21 Sail/Loft Realty is a native of Eastern North Carolina.
I
actually went to school in New Bern, but spent much of my childhood in
Oriental. My Grandparents and my mother’s brother and sister and their
families lived in Pamlico County and we visited them almost every weekend.
After college, I moved to the mountains of North Carolina and lived there
until 1985, when I sold my successful vending business and relocated to my
favorite place in the world, Oriental.
My wife and I live on the river and enjoy the many different boats we watch traveling the waterway. I have sailed most of my life, but when I'm not out exploring with potential real estate purchasers I now find the fishing in Pamlico County to be what appeals to me most.
Come on Down!

Emmett Williams: Emmett was raised in historic New Bern, NC at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers. Upon graduation from New Bern High School in 1967, Emmett attended Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, NC. In 1973, Emmett and Sail/Loft owner, Larry Gwaltney, moved to Asheville, NC where they quickly established a successful vending company. Larry sold his interest in the company in 1985 and moved to Oriental to sow his seeds in the real estate business, while Emmett remained in Asheville until 1994. After selling the vending company Emmett moved to the mountains of western Maryland, where he owned and operated a successful restaurant until 1999. The lure of salt water and the insistence of his mother, a Pamlico County native, finally brought Emmett back home to Eastern North Carolina.
Emmett enjoys camping, hiking, boating and fishing and hopes to nurture an interest in sailing eventually. Often regarded as the ultimate people-person, Emmett says that he’s really excited about meeting so many new friends and hopefully helping them to find their own little piece of paradise right here in Pamlico County.

Elizabeth
Harris:
Elizabeth was raised on the shores of Barnagat Bay, New Jersey and spent her childhood sailing, and fishing on the Metedeconk River. After attending art school, she lived in the mountains of New York State, pursuing her career in fiber arts. But Elizabeth's love of the water and boating influenced her to seek a new vocation that allowed her to use her creativity and to be on the water. She began a new career in the marine canvas trade in the city of Kingston, NY on the Hudson River. The long, cold winters of New York made the decision to head South an easy one. In September 1981, she and her family sailed down the ICW and "discovered" Oriental. They stayed in town, living aboard their boat for a year, before again setting sail for Florida. Thinking if Oriental was this wonderful there must be even better places further south. After five months, they realized that Oriental was home and they bought property immediately upon returning.
Elizabeth then established Down East Canvas, Ltd., an award-winning producer of fine canvas products for yachts of all sizes. During the years that followed, she became friends with Larry Gwaltney and his family. Larry would always tell her to come and work with
CENTURY 21 Sail/Loft Realty because of her ‘local knowledge’ of the area, the Neuse River and the Pamlico Sound. Finally, when she and her husband Joe, were ready to sell their business and Joe could retire, she called Larry and soon joined the staff of
CENTURY 21 Sail/Loft Realty.
Elizabeth and Joe enjoy their life in Oriental, fishing in the river and sound, and gardening year-round.

She attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and received her BA in Education. After graduation she immediately moved to the coast of South Carolina and taught for several years. In 1976 she went to work with Neuse Mental Health Center in New Bern as house parent and co-director of the Windjammer program for troubled children. During this time, Jennie became an avid sailor and was a member of the board of directors of Blackbeard Sailing Club. She returned to teaching and has continued in both New Bern and Pamlico County schools. After 32 years working for the state, Jennie retired and began her second career as an
Associate Broker with CENTURY 21 Sail/Loft Realty, Inc.
Jennie and her husband Bill bought a cottage on the water at Minnesott 14 years ago. With their daughter Ann, they spent summers and weekends going back and forth from Minnesott to New Bern where they lived. When their daughter graduated from high school, they sold their home and their cottage, and moved to Minnesott permanently. She enjoys the quiet lifestyle, her community, and the beauty of the water. She now enjoys spending time on the water fishing and boating. After their daughter attended UNC she returned to Pamlico County, married and has been living in Oriental. Rosemary
Cummings:
Rosemary was raised in Rutland,
VT; amidst the ski resorts of Killington Mountain and Pico Peak areas.
After
marrying her husband Harry, they moved to Massachusetts where they raised
their family. From very young ages, their children enjoyed extensive boating
from the coast of Maine to the tip of Cape Cod, Mass. Her experience of
raising her family near the water instilled in her the love of water and a
desire to always live near the water.
After the
children were grown, she and her husband explored various retirement
locations from Florida up the eastern coast to North Carolina. The Oriental
ambiance and beauty of the area kept drawing them back. Rosemary loves the
small town atmosphere, the southern hospitality of the local people, as well
as the mild seasons and the abundance of water. She often comments that the
"People" of Oriental make Oriental the special place that it is.
Rosemary is
excited about sharing her love of the area through her real estate career.
Her previous experience of 20+ years of insurance background has given her
much expertise in working with people to meet their specific needs. Rosemary
welcomes the opportunity to work with you to find your perfect dream home or
property.

Anne Gwaltney:
"Miss Anne", as she is affectionately known to her co-workers and friends, moved to Pamlico County with her husband, Joe, in the early 1970’s. Anne’s parents had retired to Oriental years earlier and several of her relatives, including her oldest sister, Helen, still lived there. Just prior to relocating, Anne and Joe sold their 2200-acre waterfront development near New Bern. This property is now known as the Fairfield Harbor Community.
Although the Gwaltneys had planned for an early retirement, it just wasn’t in the cards. Anne and Joe purchased a beautiful wooded 60-acre waterfront tract near Oriental, which is now the Sail/Loft subdivision. It wasn’t long before the Gwaltneys founded Sail/Loft Realty, Inc., the area’s oldest and most respected real estate company. Anne and Joe operated Sail/Loft Realty until 1985, when it was sold to their children. In 1992 "Miss Anne" came out of retirement to sell real estate when her son, Larry, purchased the family business from his siblings.
"Miss Anne" has recently retired as one of the full-time sales associates/brokers with Sail/Loft Realty, Inc. Her son, Larry, is the Broker-in-Charge. Anne is very active in her church and community. She is an avid bridge player and known by many for her generosity and gracious hospitality. (Lovingly written by her son Larry)
